Oxyntix
Fusion power generation via extreme intensity bubble collapse
About Oxyntix
Oxyntix Ltd was a UK-based startup that rebranded as First Light Fusion in May 2014. The company was spun out from the University of Oxford's Engineering Department in July 2011 to develop and validate patent-protected technology. The founders were Professor Yiannis Ventikos, then Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at University College, London, and Dr. Nicholas Hawker, formerly an engineering lecturer at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
The firm focuses on a new method for achieving extreme intensity bubble collapse, with potential applications in nuclear fusion power generation and sonochemistry. In July 2011, the company secured £1 million in Seed funding in a round led by IP Group, with participation from Parkwalk Advisors and several angel investors. This investment was part of an alliance with Technikos LLP, a specialist technology fund with a commercialization agreement with the University of Oxford's Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
As First Light Fusion, the company continues to pursue inertial confinement fusion, aiming to create a sustainable and clean energy source. The technology is based on extracting hydrogen isotope fuel from water to produce limitless, safe energy without long-lived radioactive waste.
