It was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2017 by Greek-Swedish songwriter and producer Alex Papaconstantinou, alongside David Stenmarck and Rami Yacoub. Initially named A-P Records, the company rebranded to Overtone Studios in March 2023 to better reflect its mission of soundtracking moments.

The company's business model centers on producing and distributing a large catalog of music across genres like ambient, classical, jazz, and lofi. It utilizes a combination of data insights and collaboration with a global roster of music creators to craft tracks designed to match specific moods for listeners and brands. Overtone Studios was acquired by Epidemic Sound and operates as a subsidiary, leveraging Epidemic Sound's digital rights model for restriction-free music. The revenue model is based on a 50/50 royalty split with its artists from streaming platform revenues, aiming to provide sustainable career opportunities for musicians.

The founders brought significant music industry experience to the venture. Alex Papaconstantinou has written for major artists like Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj, while David Stenmarck has credits with Celine Dion and Westlife, and Rami Yacoub is a prominent producer. The firm has teams in both Stockholm and New York City. The current CEO is Niklas Brantberg, who previously served as the Chief of Music at parent company Epidemic Sound.
