Oversee.net was established in 2000 by co-founders Lawrence Ng and Fred Hsu, who met while working at the ad network Startpath. They launched the company with approximately $10,000 of their own savings in a small Los Angeles office, aiming to capitalize on their expertise in online advertising, internet traffic analysis, and search engine optimization. The business model initially centered on monetizing internet traffic through "domain parking," a technology that its DomainSponsor business unit pioneered in 2002. This allowed owners of undeveloped domain names to generate revenue from the organic, direct navigation traffic to those sites.

The company experienced substantial growth, at one point managing a portfolio of over 600,000 of its own domain names and monetizing millions more for others. This success fueled a period of aggressive expansion, including the acquisition of domain auction service SnapNames in 2007 and domain registrar Moniker in 2008. A significant milestone occurred in January 2008 when Oversee.net secured a $150 million investment from private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners, which was intended to fund further acquisitions and organic growth. At its peak, the company generated over $200 million in annual revenue. The business operated two primary divisions: Oversee Domain Services, which included DomainSponsor, SnapNames, and Moniker, and Oversee Marketing Services, which ran a portfolio of lead-generation websites in verticals like travel, finance, and shopping. These consumer-facing sites included LowFares.com, AirportParking.com, CreditCards.org, and ShopWiki.com.

However, the company's trajectory shifted following the 2008 financial crisis and increasing competition. The core domain monetization business saw declining revenues, dropping from $153 million in 2007 to $92 million by 2010. In 2009, co-founder Lawrence Ng sold a significant portion of his stock, and a subsequent lawsuit filed by Fred Hsu alleged that the board's focus shifted from growth to asset liquidation to redeem Oak Hill's investment. This led to the divestiture of key assets; SnapNames and Moniker were sold in 2012, and the foundational DomainSponsor business was sold to Rook Media in 2014. Following these sales, Oversee.net refocused on its portfolio of consumer websites before eventually ceasing its original operations.
