About Outpost.com
Cyberian Outpost, Inc., which operated through its well-known e-commerce site Outpost.com, was a significant player in the online retail market during the dot-com boom. Founded in 1995 by Darryl Peck, the company established itself as one of the pioneering online-only vendors for computer hardware and software. Based in Kent, Connecticut, Cyberian Outpost carved out a niche by focusing on direct-to-consumer sales, particularly catering to expert users and offering hard-to-find Macintosh products in a market dominated by Microsoft-compatible PCs.
The company's business model revolved around global e-commerce, making its website available in 11 languages and shipping products to customers in 140 countries. This international reach was supported by an advanced logistics network, including a warehouse in Ohio that enabled next-morning domestic delivery and 48-hour worldwide delivery. Revenue growth was explosive, jumping from $1.9 million in fiscal 1996 to $355 million by 2001. The company's ascent was fueled by substantial venture capital, securing $2.7 million in 1997 and another $22 million in 1998, before launching a successful initial public offering (IPO) in July 1998 that raised $72 million. At its peak, Cyberian Outpost reached a market capitalization of $1 billion under the Nasdaq ticker COOL.
Cyberian Outpost became known for an aggressive and controversial marketing strategy, including memorable Super Bowl ads that featured gerbils being shot from a cannon and toddlers receiving temporary tattoos of the company's logo. Despite its rapid growth and brand recognition, the company was not immune to the bursting of the dot-com bubble. Facing financial difficulties, Cyberian Outpost was ultimately acquired by Fry's Electronics in November 2001 for approximately $8 million in cash, plus the repayment of debt, making the total deal worth around $21 million. At the time of the acquisition, Outpost.com had a customer base of over 1.4 million and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fry's.
