About Ostrom

Ostrom is a digital energy provider based in Berlin, Germany, that supplies households with 100% green electricity. The company was founded in January 2021 by Matthias Martensen (CEO) and Karl Villanueva (CMO/CPO). The idea originated from Martensen's experience as a consultant for energy companies, where he identified inefficiencies and a lack of customer focus. Villanueva brought his expertise in user acquisition and product experience from various B2C startups. After launching an early version of their product in May 2021, the company has seen significant growth.

Ostrom operates on a subscription-based model, charging a flat monthly fee and providing electricity at market cost. This model is designed to align the company's incentives with customers' interests in reducing energy consumption. The company offers flexible, monthly cancellable contracts and provides support in both English and German. Customers can manage their accounts, track consumption, and control their tariffs in real-time through the Ostrom mobile app. The company has received B Corp certification, reflecting its commitment to high social and environmental standards.

The company's offerings include its SimplyFair tariff with predictable billing and the SimplyDynamic tariff, which utilizes smart meters for hourly, real-time pricing. This dynamic pricing allows customers to use energy when it is cheapest and greenest. Ostrom is actively involved in accelerating the smart meter rollout in Germany, partnering with other energy providers and aiming to install one million smart meters for its customers by 2030. The company has also developed Germany's largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP), which connects and manages decentralized energy assets like electric vehicles, to help stabilize the grid.

Ostrom has raised a total of over €40 million in funding across several rounds. A notable Series B funding round in June 2025 brought in €20 million, led by Eneco Ventures, to subsidize smart meter installations and scale its VPP. Other investors include SE Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Adjacent, 468 Capital, and J12 Ventures.
