ORPEA
European leader in integrated long-term care and post-acute care
About ORPEA
In 1989, French neuropsychiatrist Dr. Jean-Claude Marian founded ORPEA, starting with a single retirement home in France. The vision was to professionalize long-term care for the elderly, a market poised for growth due to an aging population. The business model focused on providing comprehensive medical services and comfortable living environments. This strategy proved successful, and the company began a steady expansion within France. A significant milestone arrived in 2002 when ORPEA went public on the Paris Stock Exchange, providing capital for a much larger ambition. The company embarked on an aggressive international expansion, entering markets like Belgium, Spain, and Italy, often through major acquisitions. This growth was heavily fueled by debt and a real estate strategy that involved buying its facilities, which significantly built up its asset portfolio. The company's trajectory took a dramatic and dark turn in January 2022 with the publication of the book "Les Fossoyeurs" ("The Gravediggers") by investigative journalist Victor Castanet. The book alleged systemic issues, including the rationing of food and adult diapers to maximize profits. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. ORPEA's stock price plummeted, its CEO was dismissed, and the company faced criminal complaints and government investigations. Facing insolvency due to its massive debt, ORPEA underwent a painful and complex restructuring. In a dramatic move, a consortium led by the French state-owned institution Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC) took control in 2023, effectively saving the company from bankruptcy. To distance itself from the scandal and signal a new beginning, the company officially rebranded as emeis in March 2024, a name derived from the ancient Greek for "us."
