About Online Resources

In 1989, a company called Online Resources was founded with a forward-thinking mission: to power the financial interactions between consumers and their banks. Before the internet reshaped commerce, they were building the rails for online banking and bill payment. Led by CEO Matthew P. Lawlor, the company focused on providing a proprietary payments gateway that connected financial institutions directly with billers, essentially becoming a critical, outsourced technology partner for the burgeoning online channel. The company grew by providing web and phone-based financial services, creating the infrastructure that allowed customers to view account information and then seamlessly conduct transactions over the internet. Their business was to be the engine for electronic payments and marketing services that would encourage consumers to adopt these new digital behaviors. By the mid-2000s, Online Resources was expanding its footprint through strategic moves, such as its first acquisition in 2004 of Incurrent Solutions, to broaden its customer base in the competitive web banking sector. The playbook culminated in a significant event in early 2013. ACI Worldwide, a major international provider of payment systems, announced it would acquire Online Resources. The all-cash transaction was valued at approximately $263 million. For ACI, the acquisition was a strategic move to integrate Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment (EBPP) solutions into its portfolio and strengthen its leadership position in serving community banks and credit unions. In March 2013, the acquisition was completed, marking the end of Online Resources' journey as an independent entity and its integration into a global payments giant.
