About ORA

ORA operates as a verifiable oracle protocol designed to integrate artificial intelligence and other complex computations onto the blockchain. Founded in September 2022 by Kartin Wong, who previously held engineering roles at Google and TikTok, the company aims to bridge the gap between AI and decentralized applications (dApps). Formerly known as HyperOracle, ORA is building a blockchain-agnostic infrastructure that expands the capabilities of smart contracts by allowing them to securely interact with rich data sources and execute sophisticated computational tasks. In June 2024, the company announced it had secured $20 million in funding from investors including Polychain Capital, HF0, and Hashkey Capital to further its development.

The company's core business revolves around providing developers with the necessary tools to build trustless, decentralized applications. ORA's primary service is its On-chain AI Oracle (OAO), which enables smart contracts to access AI functionalities. This is achieved through a decentralized network of nodes running the TORA client, all secured by a proprietary technology called optimistic Machine Learning (opML). The opML framework functions similarly to optimistic rollups, assuming computations are correct unless challenged, which significantly reduces computational costs and enhances scalability compared to zero-knowledge machine learning (zkML) alternatives. This system allows for the on-chain use of large AI models like LLaMA 3 and Stable Diffusion.

ORA's business model includes a novel fundraising and monetization mechanism called Initial Model Offerings (IMOs). This system allows AI developers to tokenize their models using the ERC-7641 standard, a token with a built-in revenue-sharing function. When a dApp or user utilizes an AI model on the ORA network, a fee is generated. This revenue is then automatically distributed to the holders of the model's specific token. This approach is designed to create a sustainable funding source for open-source AI development while allowing investors to participate in the value creation of AI models. The protocol's native utility token, $ORA, is used for governance, staking to operate nodes, and accessing IMOs.
