OptiSolar R&D utilizes a proprietary thin-film amorphous silicon technology to develop and manufacture photovoltaic solar panels MoreLess
OptiSolar, Inc. was a significant player in the solar energy sector, established in 2005 with the ambitious goal of developing large-scale solar power plants. The company was founded by a group of individuals including Randy Goldstein, Sameer Kalra, and Avi Katz, who brought together expertise in technology and finance to tackle the burgeoning renewable energy market.
The firm's core business centered on the design, manufacturing, and installation of utility-scale solar farms using thin-film cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic technology. This approach aimed to produce solar electricity at a cost competitive with traditional fossil fuels, targeting a price point of $1 per watt for its solar modules. OptiSolar's strategy involved vertical integration, controlling the entire process from panel production to power plant operation, which was intended to streamline costs and efficiency. Their client base consisted of utility companies and large power purchasers.
A landmark project for OptiSolar was the planned 550-megawatt Topaz Solar Farm in San Luis Obispo County, California, which would have been one of the largest solar installations in the world at the time. However, the company faced significant headwinds. The global financial crisis of 2008 severely constrained the project financing market, making it difficult to secure the necessary capital for such large-scale developments. In late 2008, after laying off nearly half its workforce, OptiSolar sold its extensive project pipeline, including the Topaz project, to First Solar. The manufacturing operations were subsequently shut down in early 2009.
