About Optima Cycles

In 1991, Michael van der Meijden founded Optima Cycles in the Netherlands with a focus on producing high-quality bicycles. For over two decades, the company built a reputation for quality and design by controlling the entire process in-house, from initial design to final production. This strategy established a strong foundation in the competitive European bicycle industry. The playbook took a significant turn in June 2021 when Bolster Investment Partners acquired a 50% stake in the company. This move was not just a financial transaction; it was a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating growth and international expansion. Simultaneously, Optima integrated its sister company in Taiwan, rebranding it as Optima Cycles Asia, to streamline frame production and parts sourcing. This vertical integration gave Optima a unique position in the value chain. With new capital and a reinforced structure, Optima Cycles sharpened its focus on the rapidly growing e-bike and e-cargo bike markets under its brands Dutch ID and Lovens. The strategy paid off. In October 2024, Optima made its first major acquisition, purchasing the direct-to-consumer cargo bike brand Dolly Bikes. This acquisition strengthened its foothold in the family-oriented cargo bike segment, opening up new customer bases and sales opportunities.
