OpenHands
Open-source platform for autonomous AI coding agents
About OpenHands
OpenHands provides an open-source platform for creating and deploying autonomous AI agents that emulate the functions of a human software developer. Formerly known as OpenDevin, the project aims to move beyond simple code completion to offer generalist AI agents capable of complex tasks like modifying code, running commands, browsing the web, and interacting with APIs. The platform operates in a sandboxed environment, ensuring security while allowing agents to handle end-to-end software development duties such as bug fixing, testing, and refactoring large codebases.
The company was founded by Robert Brennan (CEO), Xingyao Wang (Chief AI Officer), and Graham Neubig (Chief Scientist), who have extensive research backgrounds in AI agents for coding. Their mission is to foster an open, transparent, and model-agnostic standard for AI-powered software development, in contrast to proprietary, closed-door alternatives. In November 2025, OpenHands announced an $18.8M Series A funding round led by Madrona, with participation from Menlo Ventures, Pillar VC, and others, to accelerate this mission. This followed a $5M seed round in September 2024.
OpenHands is designed to be flexible, supporting various large language models (LLMs) and integrating with existing developer tools like GitHub, GitLab, Slack, and Jira. The business model operates on an open-core basis. The core AI agent technology is free and open-source under the MIT license, encouraging community contribution and adoption. Commercial revenue is generated through an enterprise-focused cloud platform that offers features for teams, such as enhanced security, role-based access control, multi-user support, and budgeting tools. The company also has a strategic collaboration with AMD to advance agent performance on AMD hardware.
