About Open-Plug

Open-Plug, founded in August 2002 by Eric Baissus and David Lamy-Charrier, was a French software company that specialized in tools and software for mobile application development. The founders leveraged their prior experience managing the reference software solution for Texas Instruments' 2G and 2.5G product lines to establish the company in Sophia Antipolis, France. Open-Plug's business model centered on providing software development kits (SDKs), technology products, and professional services to mobile phone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), original design manufacturers (ODMs), chipset vendors, and application developers. Their client roster included prominent names such as Intel and Sony Ericsson.

The company's flagship product suite was branded under the name ELIPS. A key offering, ELIPS Studio, was a cross-platform development environment that functioned as a plugin for Adobe's Flex Builder IDE. This allowed developers to write applications using ActionScript and MXML and then compile them into native code for various mobile operating systems, including iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. Another product, ELIPS Stack, provided a 3G cellular telephony stack for Linux-based mobile devices. ELIPS Suite was a comprehensive user interface and middleware software stack for feature phones, integrating various third-party modules for functionalities like Java ME, WAP browsing, and predictive text input.

Financially, Open-Plug secured approximately $29.8 million in funding over two rounds, including a Series B round in October 2006. The company demonstrated significant growth, ranking 12th in France in the 2009 Deloitte Technology Fast50. On September 1, 2010, Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) announced its acquisition of Open-Plug to enhance its application development capabilities and offer a solution for the fragmented mobile market. The acquisition was part of Alcatel-Lucent's strategy to enable developers to write an application once and deploy it across multiple platforms. Following the acquisition, Open-Plug's products were integrated into Alcatel-Lucent's developer platform. The company announced the end of life for its products in December 2011, and its website and tools were shut down in December 2012.
