About Open Mobile Corp.
Open Mobile Corp. operated as a mobile network provider with exclusive services in Puerto Rico. The company was established on June 12, 2007, following the acquisition of NewComm Wireless Services' assets for $160 million by M/C Partners and Columbia Capital. This relaunch occurred after NewComm, which operated as Movistar, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2006.
The company's business model centered on prepaid, unlimited local call services, which propelled it to achieve positive EBITDA within the first five months of its new operations. A significant milestone occurred in 2014 when Verizon Wireless entered into a roaming agreement with Open Mobile, allowing Verizon customers to utilize Open Mobile's 2G and 3G networks in Puerto Rico. This was particularly crucial after Claro shut down the former Verizon CDMA network. The company also began offering Safelink mobile re-certification procedures in 2015.
In a strategic move to enhance its market position, Open Mobile announced in February 2017 that it would merge its business in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with Sprint, forming a new joint venture. The merger received regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission in September 2017, with Sprint holding the majority stake. Following this transaction, all Open Mobile stores were rebranded as Boost Mobile stores in the summer of 2018. With the subsequent merger of Sprint and T-Mobile, Open Mobile customers were transitioned to the T-Mobile network.
