The company was founded by Brian Stark and others in October 2000. Bob Miller served as the long-time CEO and chairman. The company specialized in clustered Network-Attached Storage (NAS) solutions designed to help enterprises manage the rapid growth of unstructured data. Its product line included NAS gateways, NAS systems, and unified storage systems. Specific products included the Bobcat arrays, Cougar NAS gateways with EverON software, and the Pantera products for iSCSI block and unified block/file storage. ONStor's solutions provided scalable, shared storage for Windows, UNIX, Linux, and Mac clients and servers. A key feature of their offerings was interoperability, allowing customers to use ONStor's NAS Gateways with a wide range of storage arrays from different vendors, thereby avoiding vendor lock-in. The business model focused on selling these hardware and software solutions to end-users through a global network of channel partners and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Key strategic partners included Hitachi Data Systems, 3PAR, IBM, and Fujitsu Computer Systems.
ONStor showed significant growth, reporting its third consecutive year of 100% revenue growth in early 2008. However, the company faced challenges during the economic recession. After raising over $130 million in venture capital from firms like Foundation Capital, Mayfield, and Worldview Technology Partners, ONStor was acquired by LSI Corporation on July 27, 2009, for approximately $25 million. The acquisition was seen as a way for LSI to enhance its capabilities in managing both unstructured and structured data. Following the acquisition, ONStor's technology was integrated into LSI's Engenio storage division. The ONStor brand and standalone gateways were eventually phased out.
