On-Ramp Wireless
Wireless machine-to-machine connectivity for Internet of Things
About On-Ramp Wireless
On-Ramp Wireless was founded in 2008 by Ted Myers, Rob Boesel, and Joaquin Silva. In September 2015, the company rebranded to Ingenu. The firm specialized in wireless networks for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, enabling devices to connect to the Internet of Things (IoT).
The company's core technology was Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA), a proprietary Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) technology designed specifically for M2M and IoT applications. RPMA operated on the globally license-free 2.4 GHz spectrum and was developed to provide extensive range, deep building and underground penetration, and long battery life for connected devices. The technology stack included network appliances, radio modules, and development platforms. In September 2015, alongside the rebranding, the company announced the launch of the Machine Network, a public network in the United States dedicated exclusively to machine connectivity, built upon its RPMA technology. The plan was to complete nationwide coverage by the end of 2017.
Initially, On-Ramp Wireless focused on the utilities sector, providing solutions for smart grid and smart metering applications. In 2012, it expanded its focus to include the oil and gas industries, offering services for digital oilfield automation. Its business model involved building private networks for large enterprise clients and later shifted to providing public network access through its Machine Network. The company partnered with firms like WellAware for digital oilfield monitoring and MeterLinq to deploy an IoT network in Italy for smart gas metering. By 2015, Ingenu had deployed its technology in over 20 countries. According to PitchBook, the company is now out of business.
