The NV-VPAC1 peptide can be used in two ways. Firstly, it can be used as a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging agent for the in vivo (inside the body) diagnosis of breast and prostate cancer. Secondly, NV-VPAC1 can be used in vitro (in a lab) to confirm the presence of cancer. It does this by binding to a specific receptor found only on cancer cells and emitting a fluorescent signal that can be detected in a lab.
Furthermore, the NV-VPAC1 peptide can also be used as a delivery system for radioisotopes, which are used in both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
