Nuventix
Synthetic jet cooling technology
About Nuventix
Nuventix, founded in 2005 by researchers from Georgia Tech and initially known as Innovative Fluids Inc., specialized in developing advanced thermal management solutions for electronics. The company engineered and manufactured cooling equipment centered around its patented SynJet technology, a fan-less system that uses an oscillating membrane to generate turbulent pulses of air for heat removal. This method provided a reliable active cooling alternative to traditional fans, which are prone to failure due to friction and moving parts.
The firm's business model focused on providing these compact and reliable air movers to a variety of industries, with a significant emphasis on the LED lighting sector. Clients included lighting fixture companies that required effective cooling for high-brightness LED engines used in spot, down, track, and accent lighting. Nuventix's solutions enabled manufacturers to create smaller, lighter, and more efficient luminaire designs, cooling up to 20,000 lumens in compact form factors. The company also served the telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive markets. Revenue was generated through the sale of its SynJet cooling modules and complementary heatsinks.
Led by CEO and President Jim Balthazar, Nuventix secured substantial venture capital, raising at least $57.6 million from investors such as GE Energy Financial Services, Advanced Technology Ventures, and Braemar Energy Ventures. This funding facilitated global expansion and technological advancements. A key milestone was a licensing agreement with GE Lighting to incorporate SynJet technology into GE's LED products. In 2014, after about eight years of operation and establishing a strong customer base, Nuventix was acquired by Aavid Thermalloy, a global thermal management solutions provider. The acquisition aimed to scale SynJet technology for broader adoption across electronics cooling markets.
