Nuula
A revolutionary application empowering small business owners to succeed
About Nuula
Nuula operated as a mobile-first financial services company with a strategic focus on the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The firm's history is rooted in BFS Capital, a small business lender with two decades of operational history. In 2019, the company initiated a significant transformation, marked by the opening of an engineering hub in Toronto to pivot towards a data and analytics application. This strategic shift culminated in a full rebranding to Nuula in 2021, moving its headquarters from the US to Toronto.
Under the leadership of CEO Mark Ruddock, an experienced international executive with a track record of scaling VC-backed technology and fintech startups, Nuula aimed to address a gap in the small business financial services market. Ruddock's background includes founding INEA, a software company acquired by Cartesis, and serving as CEO for mobile software firm Viigo, which was acquired by Research in Motion (BlackBerry). This experience shaped Nuula's strategy to provide entrepreneurs with tools and capital accessible from a mobile device.
The core of Nuula's offering was a mobile application designed to provide small business owners with real-time access to critical business metrics. The app integrated with cloud accounting software like QuickBooks and FreshBooks, allowing users to monitor key financial data. Its features included cash flow forecasting, credit monitoring, and tracking of customer sentiment through online ratings and reviews. This aggregation of data was intended to give a comprehensive and intelligent view of a business's overall health. Beyond analytics, Nuula developed an ecosystem of financial products offered through partners. This included access to a range of financing options, such as personal loans for business use and business insurance.
The company's business model was centered on its mobile app, which served as a gateway to a suite of financial services. Revenue was generated through this partner ecosystem. For instance, Nuula partnered with Even Financial to provide a tool for comparing loan offers from over 30 lenders. In September 2021, Nuula announced it had secured US$120 million in funding, comprising US$20 million in equity led by Edison Partners and a US$100 million credit facility from Ares Management Corporation to scale its integrated credit products. However, following the collapse of a planned Series A round in late 2022, Nuula's board decided to sell its assets. In January 2023, the company's assets were acquired by Nav Technologies, a US-based financial health platform for small businesses, which planned to integrate Nuula's technology into its own mobile offering.
