About nunos

Based in Cologne, Germany, Nunos GmbH is an agritech company operating at the intersection of aerospace technology and sustainable agriculture. The company originated as a spin-off from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), founded in 2021 by Tim Paulke, an environmental engineer who serves as CEO, and Fabian Mierbach, an electrical engineer who is the Chief Product Officer. Their journey began by adapting a technology initially developed for recycling wastewater on lunar or Martian stations into a system for terrestrial agriculture. This initiative was driven by the goal of tackling earthly challenges like groundwater nitrate pollution and the impacts of climate change.

Nunos has developed a proprietary, fully automated biological treatment process for refining liquid manure and fermentation residues from biogas plants. The core of their offering is a bioreactor system installed directly on farms, which transforms agricultural byproducts into a high-quality, plant-available liquid fertilizer. This process emulates and accelerates the natural microbial conversion processes found in soil within a closed technical system. The resulting product is a liquid fertilizer with a cocoa-like consistency that reduces greenhouse gas emissions during storage and application by 40% compared to untreated substrate. The nutrients become directly available to plants, allowing for more precise and efficient fertilization.

The company's business model centers on the development, construction, and sale of these innovative treatment systems to farmers and greenhouse operators. By enabling on-site processing, Nunos helps agricultural businesses manage resources more efficiently, reduce reliance on mineral fertilizers, and protect water, soil, and air from nutrient surpluses. The processed fertilizer is odorless, which increases social acceptance, and can be used for specialty crops, ornamental plants, and in hydroponic systems, opening new value chains for surplus manure. In July 2023, Nunos won the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank's start-up prize. The company has received investment from Founders Bay and was seeking a pre-seed investment of €250,000 in the second quarter of 2024 to build two pilot plants and prepare for market entry in 2025.
