Numemory
Storage-class memory chips with DRAM-like performance
About Numemory
Numemory, formally known as Xincun Technology (Wuhan) Co, is a Chinese fabless semiconductor startup founded in July 2022. The company operates from Wuhan, China, and focuses on the research, development, and production of next-generation memory chips. In a move to bolster China's technological self-sufficiency, Numemory has developed storage-class memory (SCM) that aims to fill the gap left by the discontinuation of Intel's Optane memory.
The company's core products are the NM101 and NM102 memory chips, which are types of SCM designed to combine the performance benefits of DRAM with the non-volatile characteristics of NAND flash memory. The NM101 is a 64-gigabit chip, while the second-generation NM102 doubles the capacity to 128 gigabits. These chips are engineered to deliver microsecond-level response times, positioning them between the faster nanosecond speeds of DRAM and the slower performance of traditional NAND. The technology is based on phase-change memory and a crossbar structure, similar to the approach used in Optane, and is intended for use in servers and storage systems in data centers.
Numemory's business model is centered on providing these advanced memory solutions to data centers and cloud computing service providers, offering a combination of large capacity, high bandwidth, and low latency. The firm's research and development efforts, which reportedly began in 2019, have resulted in a significant patent portfolio, with 273 patents as of 2023. With a team of approximately 220 employees, 80% of whom are in R&D, the company is preparing for mass production. Supported by investors like Dening Capital, Shanghai Guao Electronic Technology Company, and government entities, Numemory aims to produce 10,000 chips per month by the end of 2025.
