About Novaliq

Novaliq, a German biopharmaceutical company founded in 2007 by Bernhard Günther, operates in the ocular therapeutics market, focusing on developing treatments for eye diseases. Günther, who served as CEO until 2016, has an extensive background in the ophthalmology sector, including a previous role as CEO at Fluoron GmbH, a company specializing in intraocular staining solutions. His experience in developing and commercializing ophthalmic products has been central to Novaliq's trajectory. He was succeeded as CEO by Christian Roesky, who brought over two decades of experience from leadership roles at major healthcare companies like Bausch + Lomb, Abbott, and Alcon.

The company's core asset is its proprietary EyeSol® technology, a water-free drug delivery platform designed to overcome the limitations of traditional water-based eye drops. This technology uses semifluorinated alkanes (SFAs) as a vehicle, which enhances the stability and bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients while being preservative-free. The SFAs have a refractive index similar to water, spread rapidly across the ocular surface, and can increase the residence time of a drug on the eye from minutes to hours, enabling lower-volume, more effective doses.

Novaliq's business model revolves around the development and subsequent commercialization of its pipeline products through strategic partnerships with global pharmaceutical leaders. A key achievement was the U.S. FDA approval of two of its leading products in 2023. The first, Miebo™ (perfluorohexyloctane), formerly NOV03, is the first and only prescription eye drop that directly targets tear evaporation in patients with Dry Eye Disease (DED) associated with Meibomian gland dysfunction. The second, VEVYE™ (cyclosporine ophthalmic solution), formerly CyclASol®, is a water-free cyclosporine solution for treating the signs and symptoms of DED. These approvals followed extensive clinical trials, including the GOBI, MOJAVE, and SEECASE studies for Miebo™. The company has established licensing agreements for these products; for instance, Bausch + Lomb holds the commercialization rights for Miebo™ in the United States and Canada, and Harrow has partnered for VEVYE™.
