The company's business model is centered on providing comprehensive solutions rather than standalone products. It serves two main client categories: transport operators and train manufacturers. The core of its technology involves aggregating various communication methods, like 3G/4G/5G cellular and trackside wireless networks, to create a stable data connection for vehicles. This is distributed through an on-train network using Wi-Fi access points in each carriage. This infrastructure supports both passenger-facing services and operational functions for the transport companies. For passengers, Nomad offers Wi-Fi connectivity, real-time journey information, and on-board entertainment platforms. For operators, the firm provides solutions for remote online condition monitoring (ROCM), fleet management, and data analytics to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and safety. This includes monitoring on-board systems in real-time and providing crucial data for maintenance.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Alstom, which was announced in December 2016 and completed in January 2017. This acquisition made Nomad Digital a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alstom, integrating it into Alstom's Digital Mobility division while allowing it to retain its brand and operational independence. The move was part of Alstom's strategy to advance the development of the 'Digital Train'. Before the acquisition, Nomad had already collaborated with Alstom on projects, such as equipping Coradia Continental trains in Germany with Wi-Fi. The company has also engaged in strategic partnerships, including a joint venture with Portuguese railway maintenance company EMEF in 2013 to form Nomad Tech, focusing on remote condition monitoring.
