In 1987, Harish Thawani established Nimbus Communications in Mumbai, laying the groundwork for what would become a major player in India's media and entertainment landscape. The company initially focused on producing television content, creating over 5000 hours of programming. However, Nimbus found its true calling in sports marketing and broadcasting, launching its own sports channels, Neo Sports and Neo Cricket. A pivotal moment arrived in 2006 when Nimbus secured the global media rights for all international cricket matches played in India for four years, a deal valued at a staggering $612.18 million. This move solidified its position as a leader in cricket broadcasting. In 2010, the company's growth attracted a strategic investment, with The Times of India Group acquiring a minority stake. Following this, Nimbus even filed for an IPO, signaling ambitious plans for further expansion. Despite its successes, the company's fortunes took a downturn. Financial disputes, notably with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and unpaid loans to banks, began to mount. These challenges ultimately led to a tragic conclusion. In 2018, the Bombay High Court ordered the liquidation of Nimbus Communications due to its inability to pay its debts, marking the end of an era for the once-prominent sports broadcaster.
