About Next.e.GO Mobile

Next.e.GO Mobile SE was a German manufacturer of electric vehicles focused on the urban environment, emphasizing convenience, affordability, and reliability. The company was founded in 2015 as e.GO Mobile AG by Professor Günther Schuh, who had previously co-founded the electric van company StreetScooter. The firm designed its vehicles, such as the four-seater e.GO Life, with a durable aluminum space frame and a thermoplastic outer skin.

The company's business model centered on a disruptive production solution using proprietary technologies and low-cost, flexible "MicroFactories". This Industry 4.0 approach was designed to enable rapid, capital-efficient scaling compared to traditional automotive manufacturing. Next.e.GO aimed to sell its vehicles directly to customers and fleet operators, offering options to purchase the battery or subscribe to an energy delivery and utilization model. The product lineup included the compact e.wave X and the e.Xpress, a commercial last-mile delivery vehicle developed in cooperation with American technology provider Ample.

The company faced significant financial challenges throughout its history. It first filed for a self-administered insolvency in April 2020 due to supply chain and financing issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020, nd Industrial Investment B.V. acquired a majority stake, allowing the company to relaunch as Next.e.GO Mobile SE. Despite raising subsequent funding rounds and going public on the Nasdaq via a SPAC merger in October 2023, the company continued to struggle. In March and April 2024, both Next.e.GO Mobile SE and its parent company, Next.e.GO N.V., filed for insolvency proceedings, citing adverse market conditions, the volatility of capital markets, and the inability to secure necessary funding.
