Neurovalens

Neurovalens is a Belfast-based health technology company developing non-invasive neurostimulation products to address significant neurological and metabolic health challenges. The firm was co-founded in 2015 by Dr. Jason McKeown, a medical doctor and neuroscientist, and Paul McGeoch. Dr. McKeown's interest in electronics and the nervous system led him to explore drug-free, non-surgical alternatives to treat chronic conditions, forming the basis of the company's foundation.

The company's core technology uses electrical Vestibular Nerve Stimulation (VeNS) delivered via a headset. This device sends a safe, low-level electrical pulse through the skin behind the ears to the vestibular nerve, which in turn influences deep brain areas like the hypothalamus and brainstem that regulate functions such as sleep, stress, and metabolism. This approach avoids the need for surgical implantation and allows for earlier therapeutic intervention.

Neurovalens has achieved key regulatory milestones, securing 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its flagship products. Modius Sleep, for treating chronic insomnia, received clearance in October 2023, followed by Modius Calm (previously Modius Stress) for Generalized Anxiety Disorder in March 2024. The business model focuses on selling these physician-prescribed devices directly to patients in the U.S. market, with plans to secure insurance reimbursement. The product pipeline also includes research into treatments for obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Since its first funding round in 2017, Neurovalens has raised approximately £20 million ($26.1M) through a combination of equity and debt from investors including IQ Capital, Techstart Ventures, and the British Business Bank to support clinical trials, commercialization, and R&D.
