Neuexcell
An early stage gene therapy company focusing on neurodegenerative diseases
About Neuexcell
NeuExcell Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology firm concentrated on developing gene therapies for neurodegenerative diseases and central nervous system (CNS) injuries. The company was established in 2016 within the Penn State University tech incubator by Professor Gong Chen, who serves as the chief scientific advisor. Dr. Chen, a noted expert in regenerative medicine, pioneered the in-situ cell conversion technology that forms the basis of the company's platform. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from the Shanghai Institute of Physiology, postdoctoral fellowships at Yale and Stanford, and a professorship at Penn State before leading a brain repair center at Jinan University.
The company's core technology, the ATN™ (Astrocyte-to-Neuron) platform, challenges the long-held belief that adult neurons cannot be replaced. This proprietary platform utilizes adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy to introduce specific neural transcription factors, such as NeuroD1, into endogenous glial cells (astrocytes) located at the site of injury. This process converts the abundant glial cells directly into new, functional neurons, thereby regenerating damaged neural tissue and restoring lost function. This in-vivo trans-differentiation approach is being developed to treat a wide array of conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS, glioma, and traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries.
NeuExcell's business model revolves around the research, development, and eventual commercialization of its gene therapy products. A significant part of its strategy involves strategic collaborations. In 2021, the company entered a major research collaboration with Spark Therapeutics, a member of the Roche Group, to co-develop a novel therapy for Huntington's Disease. This agreement, potentially worth up to $190 million in fees and milestone payments plus royalties, provides Spark an option to license the worldwide rights to the program. The company has steadily raised capital to fund its operations, securing over $10 million in a Series Pre-A round in 2021 and an additional $15 million in a Series Pre-A+ round in 2023. These funds are critical for advancing its pipeline through the expensive phases of clinical trials.
The company has achieved significant R&D milestones. In December 2023, its product candidate NXL-004 received Orphan Drug Designation from the U.S. FDA for the treatment of malignant glioma. By March 2024, the first patient was dosed in an investigator-initiated trial for glioblastoma using NXL-004. More recently, in June 2025, the first patient was dosed in a clinical study for Alzheimer's disease with the therapeutic candidate NXL-001. With operations in Philadelphia, Shanghai, and Suzhou, NeuExcell is positioned to advance its clinical programs and expand its technology platform.
