About Netactive

Netactive Limited was a notable player in South Africa's burgeoning internet landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Under the leadership of CEO Lawrence Brick, the company established itself as one of the country's fastest-growing independent Internet Service Providers (ISPs), focusing on both the consumer and the small to medium enterprise (SME) markets. In pursuit of growth, Netactive secured a listing on the Venture Capital sector of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 1998 and expanded its national footprint with branches in major cities and over 40 dial-up points of presence.

The company's business model initially centered on providing dial-up internet access, demystifying the web for a new generation of users through customized software and reliable network facilities. A significant strategic move came in May 1999 when Netactive acquired specialist networking company Divergent Technology for R4 million. This acquisition was intended to create a new business arm, NetActive Networking, enhancing its service offerings for corporate and SME clients by integrating network solutions with internet connectivity.

A pivotal moment in Netactive's history occurred in January 2000, when it sold its residential dial-up subscriber base to competitor M-Web for a sum exceeding R55 million. This transaction marked a fundamental shift in strategy, as Netactive announced its intention to move away from being a consumer ISP and concentrate on value-added services in the e-commerce and enablement sectors. The capital from this sale was earmarked for developing and investing in internet-based businesses. Following this pivot, the company focused on providing internet services to mid-tier enterprises but faced a difficult market and heightened competition, leading to reported financial losses in the period up to October 2001. Information on the company's operations ceases after this point, marking its history as an early and influential, yet ultimately non-enduring, entity from the dot-com era in South Africa.
