About Neato
Neato Robotics, founded in 2005 by Stanford alumni Joe Augenbraun, Linda Pouliot, and JB Gomez, was a developer of robotic vacuum cleaners based in California. The company aimed to create robots that could perform household chores as intelligently as a human. Neato established itself as a key competitor to iRobot by focusing on products that could map an environment to ensure an efficient, single-pass cleaning session. The company's business model revolved around the direct sale of its products to consumers through e-commerce and traditional retail channels.
The firm's first product, the XV-11 robotic vacuum, was released in 2010. A significant differentiator for Neato was its use of affordable lidar technology for navigation, which generated accurate household maps and allowed the vacuums to operate effectively even in the dark. This contrasted with competitors who often used camera-based or pseudo-random navigation systems. Another distinguishing feature was the unique "D" shaped design of its vacuums, which enabled better cleaning in corners and along edges compared to round robots. Over the years, Neato introduced a series of new models, including the Botvac and D-series, continually adding features like Wi-Fi connectivity in 2011, integration with Amazon Alexa, and app-based controls.
In 2010, the German appliance manufacturer Vorwerk Group first invested in Neato, and in 2017, Vorwerk acquired the company entirely, although Neato continued to operate as an independent subsidiary. The acquisition was intended to provide Neato with financial backing for expansion while giving Vorwerk access to Neato's navigation and software expertise. Despite these efforts and various restructuring attempts, Neato struggled to achieve its economic goals for several years, facing intense competition. In May 2023, Vorwerk announced it was shutting down Neato Robotics. Vorwerk pledged to maintain the security of Neato's cloud services and the availability of spare parts and repairs for at least five years following the closure. However, it was later announced that cloud services, which enable app-based features like scheduling and mapping, would be phased out sooner than initially promised due to evolving cybersecurity and compliance standards, effectively reducing the robots to manual operation.
