About NatWest
In 1968, the British banking landscape was on the cusp of a major consolidation. National Provincial Bank, which could trace its roots back to 1833, and Westminster Bank, founded in 1834 as the London and Westminster Bank by a group including Perry Nursey, decided to join forces. This merger of two established high-street banks created a new entity: National Westminster Bank, or NatWest. The goal was to create a banking powerhouse with a vast branch network and a significant share of the UK market. The integration of these two historic institutions was a complex undertaking, setting the stage for the new bank's future. For decades, NatWest operated as a pillar of British banking. However, the turn of the century brought a dramatic and unsolicited change. In 1999, the Bank of Scotland launched a hostile takeover bid. This was swiftly countered by a rival bid from The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). After a prolonged and public battle, RBS emerged as the victor in early 2000, acquiring NatWest in what was then the largest takeover in British banking history. NatWest became a key part of the rapidly expanding RBS Group. The story took another dramatic turn during the 2008 financial crisis. The RBS Group, including NatWest, had become overleveraged and faced collapse. To prevent a systemic failure, the UK government stepped in with a massive bailout package, taking a majority ownership stake in the group. In the years that followed, RBS underwent a significant restructuring. As part of a strategic shift to rebuild its reputation and focus on its core domestic market, the parent company, RBS Group plc, was renamed NatWest Group plc in 2020. This move brought the well-known NatWest brand back to the forefront, marking a new chapter for the historic bank.
