Nanoloom
High-performance biodegradable fibres from graphene.
About Nanoloom
London-based Nanoloom, founded in 2019, manufactures high-performance, graphene-based fibre materials designed as sustainable alternatives to traditional synthetic fabrics. The company aims to provide environmentally conscious performance materials for manufacturers in the apparel, aerospace, and automotive industries. Nanoloom's core mission is to engineer textiles that do not require a trade-off between performance and environmental responsibility.
The company was co-founded by CEO Victoria Mataczynski and Professor Alexander Seifalian. Mataczynski has a background in corporate law and AI product design, and her mission was inspired by witnessing the environmental impact of microplastics during her childhood in Australia. Professor Seifalian has extensive experience in medical innovation and nanotechnology. The technology's journey originated in medical research, where the advanced materials were first developed for applications like nerve regeneration and wound healing, which require exceptional strength, flexibility, and biocompatibility. The founders' shared passion for addressing the health and environmental problems caused by non-biodegradable plastics led them to adapt the material for the textile industry.
Nanoloom has developed a patent-pending polymer solution named BioHastalex™, which is derived from functionalized graphene oxide. This process creates fibres and fabrics that are non-toxic, recyclable, and biodegradable, even in seawater. A key feature is the material's ability to be chemically recycled back to its original solution form within a single day without a loss of performance, enabling a closed-loop system. The production process also uses significantly less water than conventional synthetics and eliminates the issue of microplastic shedding.
The resulting material exhibits properties that can surpass those of conventional fibres. It is described as being stronger than steel, more flexible than rubber, lightweight, and breathable. It outperforms elastane in stretch and recovery and is stronger than nylon. Properties such as electrical conductivity and water repellence can be customized to meet specific product requirements without the need for additives. Nanoloom is initially focused on the performance wear market, creating a scalable replacement for stretch fibres. The material has been successfully tested on existing industrial looms and knitting machines, confirming its readiness for the supply chain. Beyond apparel, Nanoloom is targeting applications in aerospace, automotive, defence, and electronics.
The company has secured over $2.63 million in funding and is backed by investors including Chemstars and the Gymshark Innovation Lab. Nanoloom has received multiple grants from Innovate UK to fund projects such as the development of eco-friendly performance trainers and new types of durable garments. The company and its founders have received significant recognition; Victoria Mataczynski won the H&M Global Change Award and an Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award.
