About Muuto

Muuto is a Copenhagen-based company operating in the Scandinavian design market, offering furniture, lighting, and accessories. The firm was established in 2006 by Peter Bonnén and Kristian Byrge, who left their jobs with the goal of ushering in a new era for Scandinavian design. The name 'Muuto' is derived from the Finnish word 'muutos', which translates to "new perspective," reflecting the company's ambition to expand on the Scandinavian design heritage through new materials, techniques, and creative thinking.

The founders, Bonnén and Byrge, brought complementary experiences to the venture. Bonnén, who grew up in an artistic family, had a background in economics and management consulting. Byrge also had a business background, with a Master's in strategic management and prior experience co-founding the world-renowned restaurant Noma. Their shared passion for design led them to identify a market opportunity where many established brands relied heavily on classic designs from the 1950s and 60s. They envisioned a new golden age for Scandinavian design by collaborating with top contemporary designers. This business model involves handpicking leading designers, primarily from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, who are given the creative freedom to interpret Muuto's philosophy, and are compensated through royalties.

The company's products are aimed at the 'affordable luxury' segment and serve both residential and commercial clients, including homes, offices, cafes, and restaurants. Its product portfolio is extensive, featuring seating, tables, storage solutions, lighting, and various home accessories. The business operates on a B2B model, selling its products through a global network of over 4,000 retailers and partners, supplemented by flagship stores. This international focus was part of the strategy from day one. In December 2017, Knoll, Inc. announced its acquisition of Muuto for approximately $300 million, a deal completed in January 2018. Muuto continues to operate as an independent company and brand headquartered in Copenhagen. The acquisition was intended to advance Knoll's global presence and expand its offerings in the 'resimercial' market, which blends residential and commercial aesthetics. In 2021, Knoll itself was acquired by Herman Miller, placing Muuto under the parent company MillerKnoll.
