In 2007, from the French research institute CEA-Léti, a new company called Movea was spun out. Founded in Grenoble, France by individuals including Yanis Caritu, the company focused on developing software and firmware for motion sensing and data fusion. Movea’s goal was to translate data from sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes into information about movement and orientation. The company's technology was designed for a growing market of consumer electronics. It offered solutions for smartphones, interactive TVs, and wearable fitness devices, licensing its SmartFusion technology to partners. Early on, in 2007, Movea acquired Gyration, an American company specializing in in-air pointing devices, to expand its portfolio. This move helped solidify its position in creating more responsive and feature-rich remote controls with longer battery life. Over its lifetime, Movea raised a total of $18.7 million from investors including Intel Capital and Gimv. A significant event in Movea’s journey occurred in July 2014, when it was acquired by InvenSense, a leading provider of sensor solutions. The deal, part of an $81 million acquisition that also included another company, was a strategic move for InvenSense to integrate Movea's advanced data fusion algorithms. Sam Guilaumé, Movea's CEO, noted that the combination would bring value to customers by reducing risks and time-to-market for new products. The acquisition marked the next chapter for Movea's technology, embedding it within a larger hardware and software platform.
