In 1999, two Rhodes Scholars at Oxford University, Alexander Straub and Rouzbeh Pirouz, saw an opportunity. They observed the success of consumer sites like eBay and Priceline and envisioned a much larger market in the business-to-business space. Their idea was to create an online marketplace where small and medium-sized companies could bid for purchase requests, streamlining a time-consuming process. This concept became Mondus.com. The company secured an initial £1 million in funding from venture capital firm 3i after winning a business plan competition. Mondus quickly established itself as a promising European internet startup, expanding from its Oxford base to Germany and the US. The business aimed to revolutionize how businesses interact, capitalizing on the new possibilities offered by the internet. The most significant event in the company's journey occurred in August 2000. Italian business directory group Seat Pagine Gialle acquired a 40% stake in Mondus for approximately $150 million (£100 million). This major funding round valued Mondus at $375 million. The deal was intended to combine Mondus's e-commerce technology with Seat's extensive business directories, creating a powerful platform for connecting buyers and sellers. A month later, seeking to distance itself from the volatile "dot-com" reputation, the company rebranded from Mondus.com to simply Mondus.
