About MolecuLight

MolecuLight Inc. is a privately-owned Canadian medical imaging company focused on the wound care market. Founded in 2012 by Dr. Ralph DaCosta, a research scientist in medical biophysics, the company emerged from his work at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Dr. DaCosta's expertise in optical molecular imaging was foundational to the development of the company's core technology, which he first conceptualized after realizing that bacteria are naturally fluorescent.

The company's business revolves around its proprietary handheld fluorescence imaging platform, which enables clinicians to visualize, measure, and document wounds at the point-of-care. MolecuLight generates revenue through the sale of its imaging devices, the i:X® and DX™, and related accessories. Its primary clients include hospitals, outpatient clinics, wound care specialists, podiatrists, and long-term care facilities. The business model is focused on providing tools that improve clinical decision-making, which can lead to better patient outcomes, such as accelerated healing times and reduced antibiotic use.

MolecuLight's flagship products, the i:X® and DX™ systems, are portable devices that shine a safe violet light on a wound, causing bacteria to fluoresce in distinct colors (red or cyan). This allows clinicians to see, in real-time, the presence and location of elevated bacterial loads (>10^4 CFU/g) that might not be visible to the naked eye and often lack traditional signs of infection. Beyond bacterial detection, the devices also offer precise digital wound measurement capabilities, with greater than 95% accuracy. The MolecuLight DX™ model offers enhanced features such as EMR integration options and a more patient-centric workflow. A key differentiator is the ability to provide immediate, actionable data at the bedside, which can guide cleaning, debridement, sampling, and treatment selection without the delay of lab cultures.

Since its founding, MolecuLight has achieved significant regulatory and commercial milestones. It received Health Canada approval in 2015, followed by CE Marking for sale in Europe. A pivotal achievement was securing U.S. FDA de novo clearance in August 2018, with an expanded 510(k) clearance in late 2019 that solidified its use for detecting wounds with elevated bacterial loads. The company has also established a reimbursement pathway in the U.S. with dedicated CPT® codes. MolecuLight has successfully raised capital through multiple funding rounds, including a $11.7 million Series C in 2024 and a $27.5 million investment in early 2025, to fuel its global commercial expansion.
