About MODERN SKY

Modern Sky Entertainment is a multifaceted entertainment company founded in Beijing, China, in 1997 by musician Shen Lihui. Initially created as a record label to release music for his own band and those of his friends, it has since grown into one of the largest independent record labels in China and a significant global music entity. The company's operations have expanded to include music publishing, artist management, video production, and live event promotion.

The company's business model is diversified. It generates revenue through album releases, with a catalog of over 200 albums, and manages a roster of over 70 artists. A major component of its business is live music, most notably through the Strawberry Festivals and MDSK, which are among the largest music festivals in China. These events sell millions of tickets annually. In 2014, Modern Sky expanded its festival operations to the United States, holding events in New York's Central Park and later in Los Angeles, aiming to serve the large population of Chinese students and introduce Chinese artists to a Western audience. The company has also embraced the digital frontier, developing a video streaming platform, MNOW, and exploring virtual music festivals and NFTs.

Modern Sky has established a significant international presence with offices in New York, Berlin, London, and Liverpool. The UK division, Modern Sky UK, was launched in 2016 through a partnership with Sound City founder Dave Pichilingi, who later became the CEO for UK & North America. This division focuses on championing emerging talent, particularly from the north of England and Scotland, and has achieved multiple chart-placing albums. The company's global strategy includes creating opportunities for its Chinese artist catalog in international markets through sync and publishing deals.
