Mobius Imaging
Medical devices company providing mobile computed tomography and medical imaging solutions
About Mobius Imaging
Mobius Imaging, founded in 2008 by Eugene Gregerson, Hansen A. Yuan, and Gene Gregerson, develops and manufactures advanced intraoperative imaging technologies. The company's establishment addressed the need for high-quality, real-time imaging that seamlessly integrates into existing medical workflows, a vision they termed "Intelligent Imaging". A significant milestone was achieved in 2013 when Mobius received its first 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its flagship product, the Airo Mobile CT system. This was followed by an expanded FDA clearance for pediatric applications in 2018, broadening the system's clinical use.
The company's trajectory culminated in a major strategic move in 2019 when it, along with its sister company Cardan Robotics, was acquired by the medical technology giant Stryker. This acquisition, valued at approximately $370 million upfront with potential for an additional $130 million in milestone payments, integrated Mobius's imaging expertise into Stryker's comprehensive offerings for orthopedics, spine, and neurotechnology. The transaction provided Stryker with immediate entry into the intra-operative imaging market, complementing its existing implant and navigation systems.
Mobius Imaging's core business revolves around the design, production, and sale of point-of-care imaging systems to hospitals and surgical centers. Its primary product, the Airo TruCT Mobile CT Imaging System, is a portable, 32-slice computed tomography scanner designed specifically for use within the operating room. The system's design features a large 107cm gantry bore, allowing for flexible patient positioning, and a small physical footprint, which enables mobility between treatment rooms. This provides surgeons with immediate, high-resolution diagnostic-quality images during complex procedures, including spine, cranial, and orthopedic surgeries, as well as for applications in radiation therapy and brachytherapy. The Airo system can be integrated with surgical navigation platforms, such as Stryker's NAV3i, to provide surgeons with updated image sets for enhanced precision. Revenue is generated through the direct sale of these systems and through distribution partnerships.
