MIT Energy Initiative
University research hub for low-carbon energy solutions
About MIT Energy Initiative
The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's hub for energy research, education, and outreach. It was established in 2006 by then-MIT President Susan Hockfield and a team of faculty, with physicist Ernest J. Moniz serving as its founding director. Moniz later became the U.S. Secretary of Energy. The initiative's mission is to develop low- and no-carbon solutions to meet global energy needs, minimize environmental impact, and mitigate climate change.
MITEI connects researchers across MIT's diverse departments—including physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, and public policy—with industry partners, government, and non-profits to accelerate the commercialization of new energy technologies. The initiative's business model is based on a multi-tiered membership structure where companies can fund research programs, engage in consortia, and support fellowships. This collaboration provides industry perspectives and critical funding for next-generation technologies. MITEI's members support hundreds of research projects, including early-stage ideas through its Seed Fund Program. Research focus areas are broad, covering buildings, carbon management, electric power systems, energy storage, industry, low-carbon fuels, and transportation.
The initiative operates several key programs, including the Future Energy Systems Center, which conducts integrated analysis to transform major energy sectors. MITEI also plays a central role in education, offering an Energy Studies Minor for undergraduates, graduate fellowships, and online courses for global learners to develop the next generation of energy leaders. In 2024, William H. Green, a professor of chemical engineering, was named the director of MITEI, succeeding interim director Robert Stoner and longtime director Robert C. Armstrong. Through its research reports, collaborations, and spinout companies, MITEI aims to deliver science-based analysis to inform policymakers and drive the global energy transition.
