About Mishi
Mishi, legally registered as Hangzhou Mishi Network Technology Co., Ltd., was a venture in China's sharing economy, focused on the food technology sector. The company was established in Hangzhou in 2014, operating an online marketplace that connected local home-based chefs with consumers seeking authentic, home-cooked meals. This platform, accessible via an app, allowed users to order a variety of dishes prepared in private kitchens and have them delivered, offering a personal alternative to restaurant takeout. The business model capitalized on the growing demand for convenient, homemade food options, tapping into a network of thousands of individual cooks.
The company's operational journey began with significant investor interest. Mishi successfully secured a Series A funding round in March 2015, quickly followed by a Series B round in June of the same year. Sequoia Capital was among the institutional investors that backed the startup, which raised a total of approximately $15 million to $19 million across these rounds. The founding team included a former senior product manager from Alibaba, and a key figure identified as Tanzin was noted for being hands-on, personally taste-testing the meals offered on the platform to ensure quality.
Despite its early traction and financial backing, Mishi ceased operations around November 2017. The company faced considerable headwinds that affected the broader home-cooked meal delivery market in China. These challenges included intense competition from mainstream food delivery giants and evolving food safety regulations that required small, home-based kitchens to acquire official production permits and business licenses, which created a significant operational hurdle for its network of cooks. The platform is now defunct, and the mishi.cn domain is no longer associated with the original food delivery service.
