COO Dwight Churchill gained product and software development experience at Goldman Sachs, contributing to the launch of its consumer platform Marcus, and at Klaviyo. The founders met while working at the mobile analytics startup Localytics.

The business operates on a subscription-based model, offering a suite of AI-driven tools that streamline the entire video production workflow. Key features include automatic subtitle generation, AI eye contact correction, language dubbing into over 28 languages with the "Lipdub" feature, script creation, AI avatars, background noise removal, and automated editing. The platform can generate talking videos from text, create custom B-roll, and repurpose long-form content into shorter clips. This suite of tools targets a broad market, from individual content creators and influencers to small businesses and marketing professionals, helping them produce studio-quality videos without advanced technical skills.

Since its inception, Captions has achieved significant growth, raising a total of $100 million in funding. A Series B round in June 2023 raised $25 million, led by Kleiner Perkins. This was followed by a $60 million Series C round in July 2024, led by Index Ventures, which brought the company's valuation to $500 million. Other prominent investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Adobe Ventures, and HubSpot Ventures. In November 2024, Captions acquired AlpacaML, a generative AI company focused on image creation, to expand its creative suite.
