Miadora
Miadora, a luxury jewelry showcase on the Internet
About Miadora
Miadora emerged in 1999 as an ambitious e-commerce venture, positioning itself as an online purveyor of upscale jewelry. The company was established by co-founders Julie Schwartz and David Lamond, who served as the vice president for business development. Headquartered in California's Bay Area, first in San Jose and later in San Mateo, Miadora entered the burgeoning online retail market with a direct-to-consumer model.
The business aimed to capture the affluent consumer segment, directly challenging established luxury houses like Tiffany and Cartier for a share of the high-end jewelry market on the internet. Its digital storefront and catalog showcased a broad and curated selection of contemporary, designer, and estate jewelry. The product array was extensive, featuring everything from bridal collections and loose diamonds to vintage watches and fine gemstones. Unlike some competitors that focused exclusively on proprietary designs, Miadora offered both its own branded pieces and creations from other international designers, broadening its appeal.
Miadora's strategy attracted significant venture capital, securing $51.2 million across three funding rounds from prominent investors including Sequoia Capital, Freeman Spogli, and Capital Group. A notable move to consolidate its market position was the acquisition of Jewelry.com in February 2000. Despite these efforts and substantial financial backing, the company faced intense competition in a rapidly saturating online jewelry space. By September 2000, after failing to secure further funding and facing a foreclosure by a lender, Miadora ceased all operations, laying off its workforce of approximately 75 employees. Following its closure, the Miadora brand name was acquired and is now a brand of Delmar manufacturing.
