Founded in 2018 by CEO Richard Vibert and CTO Benjamin Van Enckevort, the London-based firm aims to address the data security risks associated with modern collaborative tools. Vibert, a data scientist with a mathematics background, previously led data strategy at Sotheby's, while Van Enckevort is an engineer who co-founded a time-tracking tool that monitored data in SaaS applications. Their combined experience led to the creation of Metomic, born from the conviction that companies needed a secure way to manage sensitive data while using productivity-boosting apps.

The company has raised a total of $25.7 million over four funding rounds, including a $20 million Series A in February 2023 led by Evolution Equity Partners. This funding was earmarked for U.S. expansion and further development of its AI-driven technology. Metomic serves clients across Europe and North America, with 50% of its customer base in the U.S. Its target clients are often in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, insurance, and legal.

Metomic's platform integrates via API with popular SaaS applications like Google Workspace, Slack, Jira, Zendesk, and Dropbox without requiring agents. Its core function is to automatically discover, classify, and protect sensitive data such as Personally Identifiable Information (PII), financial data, and security credentials. The platform uses AI and machine learning to score risks, allowing security teams to prioritize high-risk assets. Key features include real-time monitoring, automated remediation, access control management, and employee notifications. A notable feature is the "human firewall," which notifies employees in real-time when they breach data policies, enabling them to self-remediate issues and reducing the burden on security teams. The platform can automatically redact sensitive information, control access levels, and set data retention periods. More recently, Metomic has introduced solutions like Semantic Asset Classification and Data Cleanser to specifically address risks from generative AI tools like ChatGPT, ensuring datasets are sanitized before use.
