About MergeOptics

In the year 2000, as the dot-com bubble was bursting, a new company called MergeOptics was founded in Germany by Dag Neumeuer. The company's focus was on a critical piece of the internet's plumbing: fiber optic components. Their business was to design and manufacture highly integrated modules that combined optical components with high-frequency electrical circuits. These components were essential for high-speed data transfer in the growing optical communication market. MergeOptics specialized in creating compact modules, such as transceivers and later, active optical cables (AOCs), that were crucial for data centers and high-performance computing. As the demand for more speed and data increased, especially for applications needing to send data over longer distances than copper cables could effectively handle, the market for their fiber optic solutions grew. The company gained a reputation for its work in AOCs, which proved to be a significant growth area. In 2008, MergeOptics raised €5.3 million with plans to pursue an IPO. However, the path to an IPO took a different turn. On February 22, 2010, the assets of MergeOptics were acquired by FCI, a global connector and cable assembly provider. This acquisition allowed FCI to integrate MergeOptics' leadership in active optical cables with its own portfolio of copper-based solutions, offering customers a more complete set of options for high-speed connections. The journey continued when FCI was later acquired by Amphenol Corporation in 2016, integrating the MergeOptics legacy into an even larger global electronics company.
