About MeeVee

MeeVee operated as a digital media company, positioning itself as a personalized online TV guide and video aggregator before its closure. Founded in 2000 by Michael Raneri, who also served as CEO, the company aimed to address the challenge of content discovery in a rapidly expanding digital landscape. Raneri, who previously spent a decade at Charles Schwab, was drawn to the media industry's disruption, seeing an opportunity to solve the guidance problem for consumers faced with an explosion of content.

The company began with a set-top box to help users program TV shows and later pivoted to a web-based application. MeeVee's core service was a free online guide that provided local TV schedules, show details, ratings, and trailers for hundreds of cable and satellite channels. Its platform enabled users to create profiles based on their favorite shows, actors, or interests to receive personalized recommendations. Beyond being a simple listings provider, MeeVee functioned as a social platform for television enthusiasts, allowing them to connect, write reviews, and track friends' activities.

MeeVee's business model evolved to include affiliate networking and B2B services. It supplied a white-label video platform to media companies like USA Today and the Seattle Times, allowing them to deliver video content on their own sites. The company also developed a video aggregator that pulled content from numerous online sources and created a widget used by blogs and Facebook users. Despite raising approximately $16 million in venture capital from investors including Labrador Ventures, Walden Venture Capital, and DEFTA Partners, MeeVee ceased operations in 2008. The company was unable to compete with larger, well-funded competitors like TV Guide and was ultimately acquired by LiveUniverse in May 2008 after its funding ran out.
