About Medicrea

In the world of complex medical procedures, spine surgery stands out. Denys Sournac, founder of Medicrea, recognized a fundamental challenge: the human brain simply cannot compute all the variables for a single patient's unique spinal anatomy. Founded in France in 1990, Medicrea set out to solve this by pioneering custom-fit spinal implants. The company developed a platform using predictive modeling and sophisticated algorithms to digitally map a patient's spine. This allowed them to design and manufacture patient-specific, 3D-printed titanium implants. The core idea was to move away from one-size-fits-all hardware and create solutions tailored to an individual's specific needs, leveraging a growing database of thousands of surgical cases to inform the artificial intelligence. This innovative approach did not go unnoticed. By July 2020, medical technology giant Medtronic saw the immense value in Medicrea's technology. Medtronic announced a friendly, all-cash tender offer to acquire the French company for approximately €140 million ($160 million). The deal was a strategic move for Medtronic, allowing it to integrate Medicrea's AI-driven surgical planning and personalized implants with its own suite of robotics and 3D imaging. The acquisition was completed in November 2020, making Medicrea a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medtronic. The move positioned Medtronic as the first company to offer a fully integrated solution for spine surgery, from AI-powered planning to robotic-assisted delivery, ultimately fulfilling Sournac's vision of bringing true customization to the operating room.
