MediaCom Worldwide - People First, Better Results MoreLess
In 1995, from the basement of his home, Rocco B. Commisso founded Mediacom. The strategy was straightforward: acquire and improve cable systems in smaller, underserved American communities. While larger providers focused on major metropolitan areas, Mediacom saw an opportunity in the towns and cities that others overlooked. This foundational decision set the company on a path of steady growth, acquiring its first cable system in Ridgecrest, California, in 1996. A significant turning point came in February 2000, when Mediacom went public with an initial public offering that priced at $19 per share, raising $380 million. This infusion of capital fueled further expansion and enabled the company to upgrade its infrastructure, a crucial step in the burgeoning era of high-speed internet. The company continued to grow, becoming the nation's 8th largest cable operator. However, the company's journey as a public entity concluded in March 2011. In a transaction valued at approximately $600 million, Rocco B. Commisso took Mediacom private. This strategic move allowed the company to focus on long-term goals rather than quarterly financial reporting. Today, Mediacom is the fifth-largest cable provider in the U.S., still wholly owned by its founder.
