Medherant
Novel transdermal patch for controlled drug delivery
About Medherant
Medherant is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company that develops transdermal drug delivery patches. The company was founded in 2015 as a spin-off from the University of Warwick by Professor David Haddleton, leveraging his expertise in bioadhesives and polymer chemistry. Haddleton, a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Warwick with over 30 years of experience, specializes in polymers for healthcare and has founded multiple spin-out companies.
The company’s core technology is the TEPI Patch®, a proprietary drug-in-adhesive platform designed for the controlled release of pharmaceuticals through the skin. This technology utilizes a unique pressure-sensitive adhesive that allows for a high drug-loading capacity, enabling the delivery of a wider range of drugs and higher doses than many existing patches. The drug is mixed directly into the adhesive matrix, which ensures consistent and controlled release. The patches are designed to be thin, flexible, comfortable, and leave no residue upon removal. The manufacturing process is solvent-free, making it more efficient and scalable.
Medherant's business model has two main approaches: developing its own pipeline of products for future licensing and collaborating with pharmaceutical partners to formulate their existing drugs for transdermal delivery. A collaboration with Bayer to develop a transdermal patch for an approved oral medicine was announced in March 2024. The company generates revenue through these partnerships, with expectations of future milestone payments and licensing revenues. Its lead product is a testosterone patch for treating Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in post-menopausal women, a significant unmet medical need. In October 2025, the company announced positive results from a Phase I clinical trial for its testosterone patch, which successfully restored testosterone levels to the normal pre-menopausal range.
Medherant has secured funding from investors including Mercia Asset Management, the British Business Bank, and private investors. As of April 2023, the company had raised a total of $13.5 million over six funding rounds.
