In 1981, as the Space Shuttle era began, Jay Bertelli founded Mercury Computer Systems in Massachusetts. He identified a critical need within the defense industry: leveraging emerging commercial processing technologies for high-stakes signal intelligence applications. The company's focus was on developing powerful, rugged computing hardware and software designed to operate in the harshest environments, from fighter jets to naval ships. A pivotal moment arrived in 1998 when the company, then known as Mercury Computer Systems, went public on the Nasdaq under the ticker MRCY. This IPO provided the capital for a new chapter defined by aggressive strategic acquisitions. Over the next two decades, the company executed more than 20 acquisitions, systematically buying smaller firms to absorb their specialized technologies in areas like radio frequency and microwave components. This roll-up strategy was deliberate, aimed at transforming the company from a component supplier into a provider of integrated, secure subsystems for major defense contractors. In 2012, to reflect this broader mission, the company officially changed its name to Mercury Systems.
