Utility-scale geothermal power from superhot rock MoreLess

Mazama Energy is a geothermal development company advancing methods for extracting heat from superhot rocks (SHR) to generate carbon-free, baseload energy. The company was incubated by Khosla Ventures and is backed by Khosla Ventures and Gates Frontier. Mazama's capabilities are derived from its founders, AltaRock Energy and Blade Energy Partners. The leadership team includes Chairman Bob Heinemann, CEO Sriram Vasantharajan, and Chief Geoscientist Alain Bonneville, combining expertise from the oil and gas and geothermal sectors.

The company's proprietary MUSE™ (Modular Unconventional Superhot Energy) technology platform is a synthesis of engineering and operational advancements designed to lower the cost of electricity to less than $50 per MWh. MUSE incorporates advancements in well engineering, horizontal drilling in SHR, and the creation of durable, stimulated flow paths to connect injector and producer wells. One of its key technologies, Thermal Lattice™, builds on hydraulic fracturing to create complex fracture networks for improved heat extraction. This approach allows Mazama's wells to achieve 5-10 times more power output than conventional geothermal systems while using 75% less water and drilling 80% fewer wells. The company also utilizes its Heat Harvester™ model to predict and optimize the entire system cycle, from injection to electricity generation.

Mazama Energy is developing projects to provide clean, 24/7 power, making it a suitable energy source for high-demand clients like hyperscale data centers and for industrial electrification. A significant milestone was the creation of the world's hottest Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) at its pilot site in Newberry, Oregon, reaching a bottom-hole temperature of 629°F (331°C). This project, supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), serves as a demonstration for a first-of-its-kind SHR EGS. Following the pilot's success, Mazama plans to advance to a 15 MW commercial pilot in 2026 and then scale to a 200 MW development project at Newberry.
