MaxWest Environmental Systems
Develops a system with a gasification and heat integration process that converts biosolids into energy
About MaxWest Environmental Systems
MaxWest Environmental Systems, founded in 2007, specialized in waste-to-energy gasification facilities. The company focused on converting carbon-based waste materials, such as biosolids from wastewater treatment, into renewable energy. Its primary clients were municipal and commercial wastewater treatment facilities. MaxWest's business model included licensing its proprietary technology and developing facilities under a Design, Build, Own, Operate (DBOO) framework.
The core of MaxWest's offering was a proprietary biosolids gasification system that used a thermo-chemical process to convert wastewater residuals into syngas. This syngas was then used to generate thermal energy on-site, which could power sludge dryers or, in larger systems, generate electricity. A key benefit of this technology was the significant reduction of waste volume by over 90 percent, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional disposal methods like landfills or incineration. One of the company's major milestones was a 20-year contract signed in 2009 with the City of Sanford, Florida, to build and operate a 73-wet-tonne-per-day biogasification facility. This was the first North American municipality to adopt the MaxWest system. By 2012, MaxWest had launched a second-generation system that increased throughput by 40% and improved energy conversion rates.
Despite its early successes, including processing over 23,000 wet tons of biosolids at its Sanford facility, the company faced financial difficulties. Operations at the Sanford plant ceased in May 2013 due to the company's financial situation. In January 2015, MaxWest Environmental Systems filed for bankruptcy, and its assets, including the gasification plant and intellectual property, were acquired by PHG Energy (now Aries Clean Technologies).
