MatchMine
Media recommendation service that categorizes and analyzes users’ media likes and dislikes and serves relevant content
About MatchMine
MatchMine Inc. operated as a technology firm specializing in media personalization and recommendation services during the mid-2000s. The company developed a sophisticated preference and recommendation engine designed to predict media content—spanning music, videos, movies, and blogs—that users would enjoy.
The company was led by CEO Michael Troiano, a marketing and advertising veteran with a background that includes being the founding CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Interactive and holding leadership roles at firms like McCann-Erickson. A graduate of Cornell University and Harvard Business School, Troiano's experience in brand building was applied to steer MatchMine's strategy. He served as CEO between 2007 and 2008.
MatchMine's core product was a portable recommendation engine. The system functioned by analyzing a user's stated preferences and calculating the relationship between those items and other content within its database. This allowed for the generation of personalized suggestions. A key differentiator was the portability of a user's preference data, or "key," which was stored on MatchMine's servers. This enabled partner websites to integrate the service and deliver cross-platform recommendations without requiring end-users to install local software. The business model was primarily B2B, targeting media sites aiming to increase user engagement and sales by providing more accurate content suggestions. The company secured at least $13 million in a Series B funding round from venture capital firms, which included Betaworks and Allen & Company.
Ultimately, MatchMine's trajectory concluded with its acquisition by the Finnish multinational corporation Nokia in 2009 for an undisclosed sum. The purchase was a strategic move by Nokia to integrate MatchMine's underlying technology and its team of engineers into its own service offerings, marking the conclusion of the startup's journey as an independent entity.
